Key takeaways

  • Mage is the best AI tool for webtoons and manga panels for most creators: it keeps a saved cast consistent from episode to episode, and its Mage-exclusive Mango 3 model runs unlimited on the $30 Pro plan.

  • LlamaGen drafts a whole vertical episode from a script, and Anifusion pairs panel layouts with speech-bubble lettering for $9 a month.

  • NovelAI's V5 model draws a fully paneled manga page in one generation, speech bubbles included.

  • Clip Studio Paint handles lettering, slicing and export, and copainter and Krita AI Diffusion help artists who draw their own line art with cleanup and color.

  • Tapas doesn't allow AI-generated comics, while WEBTOON's Canvas terms don't mention AI, though its contests ban it.

What a webtoon needs that a comic page doesn't

A webtoon is read as one long vertical scroll on a phone, so the work is different from laying out a printed page. Panels sit in a single column with generous white space between them, and the art has to hold up at phone width. WEBTOON's creator handbook asks for images no more than 800 pixels wide and 1,280 pixels long, slices anything bigger automatically, and caps an episode at 100 images and 20MB. It suggests at least 200 pixels between panels and 600 to 1,000 pixels for a scene change. Manga pages are the opposite problem: several panels on one page, read right to left, with vertical lettering. Either way, the hardest part for AI is drawing the same character the same way in every panel, every week.

How we ranked

We looked at how well each tool keeps a cast consistent across panels and episodes, support for tall webtoon panels and manga page layouts, lettering, line art and coloring help, commercial-use terms and price. Midjourney's Niji 7 makes polished anime key art, but it doesn't support character reference, so it's better for covers than for a running series.

1. Mage - Best overall

Mage is a browser-based image and video platform whose Characters and References keep a cast consistent across a whole series.

What works: Build a Character from one portrait, or turn a single image into a front, side and back turnaround with the Character Sheet app, then call it by its handle in any prompt. References save outfits, poses, locations and objects the same way, so "@mara in @uniform on @rooftop" stays the same from episode to episode. Mango 3, Mage's exclusive flagship model, generates tall panels up to 9:21 and runs unlimited on the $30 Pro plan, which also makes Character creation unlimited. For classic manga line art, Illustrious checkpoints run unlimited from the $10 Basic plan with LoRAs. Inpaint fixes a hand or expression without redrawing the panel, and images are private by default.

What doesn't: It doesn't letter or assemble episodes.

Best for: Webtoon and manga creators who need the same cast in every episode.

2. LlamaGen.ai - Best for drafting a whole episode from a script

LlamaGen is a comic generator with a dedicated webtoon mode that turns a script into a vertical episode.

What works: Its webtoon generator lays out a vertical episode with a recurring cast and carries locations and lighting from scene to scene, and it adds captions and comic lettering from the $18 Standard plan, with up to 20 panels per prompt. Pro, at $30 a month or $24 billed yearly, adds character consistency, up to 40 panels per prompt and comic-to-video, and you can train a LoRA on your own art. LlamaGen's terms give you the rights to what you make, including commercial use.

What doesn't: Character consistency starts at Pro, the free plan caps pages at four panels and one character, and companies earning over $500,000 a year need Pro or higher.

Best for: Writers who want a script turned into a rough episode fast.

3. Anifusion - Best for manga pages with lettering

Anifusion is a manga and anime comic creator with panel layouts and a lettering editor built in.

What works: You pick a panel preset or draw your own grid, generate each panel, then letter it with editable speech bubbles, captions and fonts. Character sheets and LoRAs keep a character on model, and Anifusion says its webtoon exports meet WEBTOON and Tapas specs at 800 pixels wide. Creator costs $9 a month for 2,000 credits, Pro is $24, credits don't expire, and paid plans include commercial use.

What doesn't: The free plan has only 100 credits, and its help center suggests building a chapter page by page rather than all at once.

Best for: Manga creators on a budget who want art and lettering in one place.

4. NovelAI - Best for one-shot anime manga pages

NovelAI is an AI storytelling service whose V5 image model, released August 21, 2026, can draw a full manga page at once.

What works: Describe the page and V5 returns a multi-panel layout in a single generation, with characters placed where you want them and dialogue in speech bubbles in English, Japanese or Chinese. It also takes prompts in Japanese. Plans cost $10, $15 and $25 a month, and NovelAI says what you create is yours to use, including commercially.

What doesn't: Its Precise Reference and Vibe Transfer tools didn't support V5 at launch and still only work on the older V4.5 models, so keeping a character on model over a long series is harder. There's no free plan beyond a trial of 30 image generations, and V5 has a usage cap even on the $25 Opus plan.

Best for: Anime artists who want a whole paneled page in one generation.

5. Clip Studio Paint - Best for finishing and exporting episodes

Clip Studio Paint is Celsys's drawing and comic app, and version 5.0 came out in March 2026.

What works: Its webtoon canvas shows a guide for the visible screen area, and Export webtoon slices a long canvas into JPG or PNG files ready to upload. Panel frames, balloons, screentones and 3D pose figures cover the rest of the page, and the Colorize tool colors merged line art from optional hint colors. PRO costs $4.49 a month or $26.99 a year, or $63 once for a perpetual license, and EX is $277 one-time.

What doesn't: Colorize is still labeled a technology preview and uploads your image to Celsys's servers, multi-page webtoon projects need EX, and it doesn't generate images from prompts.

Best for: Lettering, assembling and exporting finished episodes.

6. copainter - Best for line art cleanup, flatting and color

copainter is a Japanese AI tool built mainly to clean up and color artists' own drawings.

What works: It turns rough sketches into clean line art, flats (fills base colors), colors in flat, anime, brush or watercolor styles, and adds shading, and it exports layered PSD files you can keep editing. It also changes poses and camera angles and turns photos into backgrounds, and a Manga Agent added in October 2026 can plot and draw pages. copainter says uploads aren't used for training, and commercial use is allowed. Light costs $6 a month, Basic $18 and Pro $48, with discounts billed yearly.

What doesn't: The free plan gives only three tickets a month, and individual plans are limited to creators with under ¥10 million in sales.

Best for: Artists who draw their own pages and want to skip the flatting.

7. Krita AI Diffusion - Best for free, local coloring and fixes

Krita AI Diffusion is a free, open-source plugin that adds image generation to the Krita painting app.

What works: It runs on your own computer through ComfyUI, so nothing leaves your machine, and it costs nothing. Line art, scribble and pose controls guide the AI from your own drawing, and Regions let you prompt different parts of a panel separately, which helps when coloring or redrawing one character. A paid cloud option exists if your computer can't run it.

What doesn't: Local use works best on an NVIDIA graphics card with at least 6GB of video memory (AMD, Intel and Apple Silicon also work, more slowly), setup takes more effort than a web app, and there's no lettering or episode layout.

Best for: Artists who want AI help without a subscription or cloud uploads.

Where can you publish an AI webtoon?

Check the platform before you've built a series. Tapas's content guidelines don't allow AI-generated content. WEBTOON's Canvas terms, last updated in January 2026, don't mention generative AI, but its creator contests have required that entries not be made with any form of generative AI. Copyright's the other catch: in the US, the Copyright Office registered the text and the arrangement of the AI comic Zarya of the Dawn but not its AI-generated images, and its 2025 report says prompts alone aren't enough for protection. Your story, dialogue, panel arrangement and any art you draw or substantially edit yourself can still be protected.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI tool for making webtoons?

Mage, for most creators. It keeps a saved cast consistent across episodes, makes tall panels with its Mage-exclusive Mango 3 model, and runs Mango 3 unlimited from $30 a month. Pair it with a layout app such as Clip Studio Paint for lettering and export.

What size should webtoon panels be?

WEBTOON asks for images no more than 800 pixels wide and 1,280 pixels long, sliced automatically if larger, with up to 100 images and 20MB per episode.

Can AI keep the same character across a whole webtoon?

Yes, with the right tool. Mage's Characters and References, LlamaGen Pro and Anifusion's character sheets are built for it. NovelAI's reference tools don't yet work on its V5 model.

Can I post an AI-generated webtoon on WEBTOON or Tapas?

Tapas doesn't allow AI-generated content. WEBTOON's Canvas terms don't mention AI, but its contests ban generative AI entries.

Is there a free AI tool for manga?

Krita AI Diffusion is free and open source if your computer can run it, ideally with an NVIDIA graphics card with 6GB or more of video memory. LlamaGen, Anifusion and copainter have limited free plans.
