ChatGPT vs Claude for Image Generation in 2026
ChatGPT generates images with Images 2.5, and Claude builds charts, diagrams and layouts in code. What each does with visuals, and which to use.
ChatGPT generates images with Images 2.5, and Claude builds charts, diagrams and layouts in code. What each does with visuals, and which to use.

ChatGPT generates images natively. Since September 8, 2026, it's run ChatGPT Images 2.5, which every plan gets, Free included.
Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations. Its visuals are built from code: charts, diagrams, interactive graphics, slides and layouts.
To work on real images inside Claude, you connect an outside tool, such as Adobe's connector, which brings in tools from Photoshop, Firefly, Express and other Adobe apps.
Use ChatGPT for photos, illustrations, product shots and posters, and Claude for diagrams, data visuals and layouts you'll want to change and reuse later.
No. Anthropic's own help center says Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do, and nothing in its release notes through September 2026 adds the feature. Claude's visuals are written as code, mostly HTML and SVG, and render in the chat or as artifacts. ChatGPT has had native image generation since March 2025, and Images 2.5 is its third new image model since December 2025, after GPT Image 1.5 that month and Images 2.0 in April 2026.
That makes the comparison lopsided on purpose. If the job ends in a picture, ChatGPT does it in one step; in Claude you'd build it from code or route it through a connected image tool.

ChatGPT Images 2.5 arrived on September 8, 2026, less than five months after OpenAI's Images 2.0 launch. The company says it brings sharper details and more precise editing, cuts generation latency by up to 50% compared with 2.0, and is better at preserving the subjects of your reference photos. By OpenAI's count, people create more than 3 billion images a week across ChatGPT Images and its image models in the API.
What works: You can generate in any aspect ratio, ask for a transparent background, and add readable text, which was the big jump with Images 2.0. In TechCrunch's test of that model, a generated restaurant menu could have passed for a real one, and OpenAI says it improved rendering of non-Latin text such as Japanese, Korean, Hindi and Bengali. To edit, you select part of an image and describe the change, or upload your own photo and ask for edits. In the mobile app, you can sketch a rough layout and have ChatGPT render it.
What doesn't: OpenAI warns that selections aren't always precise and edits can spill outside the area you picked. Complex images can still take a few minutes. OpenAI doesn't publish exact image limits. Free gets limited image creation and Go gets more, and neither includes images with thinking, the mode for more complex images that's available on Plus, Pro and Business.
Content rules: OpenAI's usage policies bar non-consensual intimate content, any sexualization of minors, and using someone's photorealistic likeness without consent in ways that could confuse authenticity. OpenAI adds C2PA metadata and an invisible watermark to help identify images made with its tools.
Price: Free includes limited image creation, Go ($8 a month) gives more, Plus ($20) adds images with thinking, and Pro (from $100) makes image creation unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails. Developers can use the same models through the API as GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and Sunburst.
Since March 2026, Claude can build custom visuals directly in the chat, including diagrams, charts and interactive graphics, on every plan, Free included (the feature is still labeled beta). They're written in HTML, so you can ask for changes in plain language and get the exact edit, then copy the result as an image or download it as SVG or HTML.
What works: Text, numbers and labels come out exactly as typed, since they're characters in code, which makes Claude dependable for flowcharts, data charts, infographics and slide layouts. On paid plans, Claude Design (in beta) turns a prompt into designs, prototypes, slides and one-pagers that export to Canva, PDF, PPTX or HTML. Claude can also read images you upload, and because it can run code on uploaded files on every plan, it can handle simple jobs like cropping or resizing a photo.
What doesn't: It can't produce a photo, a painted illustration or a product shot on its own. Custom visuals don't render in the iOS and Android apps, only on the web and desktop.
Getting real images: Claude connects to outside creative tools. Adobe's connector, launched in April 2026, gives Claude 50+ tools from Creative Cloud apps including Photoshop, Firefly, Lightroom and Express, so it can retouch photos and build designs from templates. The connector works on images you supply, so you'll still need a photo or template to start from. You don't need an Adobe account to start, though signing in raises the usage limits and unlocks more tools.
Price: Custom visuals and connectors don't need a subscription; both are on the Free plan. Claude Design needs a paid plan, such as Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually) or Max (from $100).
